Freedom Summer, launched in June 1964, was birthed to expand the growing electorate with as many Black voters as possible in Mississippi. Our community, from the young to the young at heart, deserves access to the same power and resources as our counterparts.
Join The Equity Alliance Fund and our coalition partners as we uplift the voices of the next generation of democracy defenders. Together with our coalition, we will host events to educate, empower, and mobilize voters in Tennessee! Build a movement with us, and be a part of the shift we need in democracy!
Saturday, August 19 at 2:30 pm, Freedom Summer kicks off with Build The Bloc, a community canvass starting at Black Seeds Urban Farm LLC. This canvassing event is our way to connect with the Memphis community and get out the word about the special session and Memphis Municipal Election.
Sunday, August 20, from 10 am - 1 pm, The Equity Alliance Fund will host the Bridge The Bloc brunch at Thrive Social Bar. This brunch and learn session will provide an opportunity for Memphians to learn more about The Equity Alliance Fund.
Monday, August 21, our youth organizers lead a march and rally to coincide with the Tennessee Legislature’s highly anticipated special session.
12 pm - 1 pm meet at First Baptist Church Capitol Hill
1 pm - Together We March
2 pm - Together We Rally
We had a wonderful time in Memphis mane!
We did some deep canvassing on Saturday, talking to folks in the neighborhood about the special session and our upcoming community-wide events. We knocked on 460 doors in 1 hour.
On Sunday we hosted Bridge the Bloc Community Brunch at Thrive Social Club, where we had great conversations about public policy affecting Memphis and Tennessee as a whole.
Nashville was the final stop of our Freedom Summer Tour. We were led through the streets of downtown Nashville by Sankofa Drum and Dance, a Nashville-based performing arts company inspired by the need to reexamine our past as we build our future.
Speaking of the Sankofa Bird, no symbol could be more fitting for our current moment in history which calls us to rally the strength and vision of our ancestors as we stand together to demand immediate legislative action for the safety of ourselves and our children.
This summer, our youth organizers have been putting in work to engage youth from across the state to get active and get out the vote this election season.
Democracy is not a spectator sport.
